The fancy's only full color, print quarterly All-Breed cat publication.

Lanyap (also known formally as lagniappe) is a small gift given to a customer by a merchant at the time of a purchase, such as a 13th cookie or donut when buying a dozen, or more broadly something given or obtained gratuitously or by way of good measure; a bonus.

The word is used in Trinidad and Tobago, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, Charleston, SC gulf coast of Mississippi, the gulf coast of Alabama, and extreme south-eastern Texas. It was also once in common usage by antiquarian booksellers, without regional limitation, and is still used by more old-fashioned members of that tribe.

Lanyap Publications LLC, comprised of Cathy Scarbrough and Stephanie Ujhelyi, began in 2008 to distribute publications geared to cat breeders and exhibitors. The Long & The Short of It was the initial effort as a quarterly publication geared to Persian and exotic cat exhibitors.

Halfway through its sophomore year, Scarbrough and Ujhelyi made a decision to promote the publication from a Specialty breed publication to an All-Breed publication. Starting with our Fall 2009 issue, we will feature all breeds recognized by ACFA, CFA, FiFe and TICA.

As our own little dose of "lanyap," we publish an annual calendar (if interest exists) that all of our subscribers receive as a bonus to their regular magazine. Cats of the Months still exist for 2010's calendar, so contact me privately if one is interested in including one of their own as a calendar cat.

Subscribers also enjoy promotional opportunities through our complementary submissions as well as various types of paid advertising opportunities for exhibitors in CFA, TICA, CCA and various other associations.

About Cathy Scarbrough: Scarbrough, a Persian and Exotic breeder and exhibitor under the cattery name Carictor since 1976, is Lanyap Publications' financial guru, working in banking and with numbers for years. She breeds solid and bicolors as well as silvers & goldens, but her shaded kitties hold a particularly special place in her heart. Scarbrough resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and is an avid linechaser.

About Stephanie Ujhelyi: Ujhelyi, who breeds and exhibits smoke bicolor persians under the CFA cattery prefix Purrshinka, is Lanyap's creative person. Ujhelyi uses her two decades of experience in publications, winning numerous state and national awards in reporting and design to act as the L&S' editor. For her day job, Ujhelyi covering crime and government for The Review, as well as acting as The Review's own "pitbull" called out to handle officials reluctant to honor Ohio's Sunshine Law.
